Honest History for a Dishonest Age
America turns 250, and after years of watching the country argue with itself, I went looking for something steadier than the noise — the real documents, the real stories, the real record of how this improbable nation was built and rebuilt, generation after generation.
What I found became this book: a sweeping, human journey from the founding to today. It doesn’t flinch from America’s failures, and it doesn’t apologize for its greatness. Slavery and the Civil War, civil rights and the cost of freedom — alongside the music, the inventions, and the ordinary people who made this the most daring experiment in human history. By the last page, you won’t just know America’s story. You’ll remember why it’s worth carrying forward.

About
Kyle Walkenhorst
Kyle Walkenhorst is, as family and friends will tell you, a giver and an optimist who has never met a dance floor he didn’t like. His grandparents arrived through Ellis Island in 1923. His father was born on the same Christmas Day — the first American in the family — and later served in the Navy during World War II. Kyle was raised with deep gratitude for the country that gave his family everything.
For thirty years, he has helped brands tell their stories and grow as a publisher, sales and marketing leader, and founder of the award-winning agencies Sprocket Media and Walkenhorst Media Group. He pioneered native advertising, grew Oracle Magazine from $65,000 to $1 million per issue, and built brands for companies of every size — from IBM, Dell, and Morgan Stanley to fast-growing startups.
After three decades of telling other people’s stories, he finally tells his own. He went in search of hope and found it. Kyle lives in Palm Springs, California, with his partner and their dog, Zoe — the true head of the household.
